The Heart of the Hills by John Fox, Jr. is a first edition novel printed in 1913 with some significant ties to Sacramento history as it is signed by a member of the highly esteemed Gable family important in Sacramento agricultural history. The book is in pristine condition with beautiful red cover and art plates by F. C. Yohm. Some of the plates include the original protective tissue. The book has the original bookseller ticket or bookplate from Wm. Purnell in Sacramento.

It was printed in early 1913, shipped across the country to W.F. Purnell's shop on K Street in Sacramento, purchased by the original owner, and immediately signed or gifted that very same year.

The name inscribed on the cover was Gertrude Gable, a member of the prominent Gable family in Sacramento. They owned the Gable Mansion in Woodland, CA, now a California Historical Landmark.
