Large Venetian Canal Oil Painting, Doge's Palace at Golden Hour — Heavy Impasto, Gold Gilt Frame, 42 x 30

Three and a half feet of Venice at golden hour, and every inch of it painted by hand.

The sun sits low over the Bacino and lays a band of gold straight down the middle of the water. The Doge's Palace glows pink and ochre along the left, the Riva runs off behind it into haze, and the foreground is full of working Venice — a gondolier poling toward you, cargo barges under barrel-hoop awnings, a tall-masted trading boat with its sail hanging slack on the right. There's a whole crowd of little figures along the arcade. You keep finding things in it.

What you notice in person is the paint. It's laid on thick — the highlights on the water stand up off the canvas in ridges, and they catch whatever light is in the room, so the picture shifts through the day. That doesn't photograph. Nothing here is printed.

It's a room-anchoring size. Over a long sofa, above a mantel, at the end of a hallway, or on a dining room wall where candlelight can get at the impasto. The gold gilt frame is original to it — black panels, cast corner and center cartouches, deep enough to give the picture real presence. A frame this size runs a couple hundred dollars new, on its own.

Signed lower left. The signature is indistinct and appears to read "C. angelo," and I haven't been able to tie it to a listed artist — so I'm selling you the painting, not a name. That is exactly why a hand-painted oil this size is priced where it is.
