A working harbor on a grey morning, painted thick and fast — white sloops riding at their moorings, a forest of masts behind them, and a whole waterfront of warehouses and pale buildings stacked along the far shore with a church tower breaking the skyline.

The paint is the thing. It's laid on with a knife in places — the hulls, the light on the water, the little flares of orange on the mooring buoys — so the surface has real relief and catches whatever light is in the room. Up close it breaks into slabs and streaks of color; step back and it snaps into a harbor. That is a hard trick, and whoever painted this could do it.

Blue-grey and white throughout, with just enough rust and ochre in the buildings to keep it warm. It's a calm picture, and it suits a room that gets used — a bedroom, a study, a hallway you pass every day.

Signed lower left, R. Casimiro. I have not been able to match that name to a listed artist, so I am selling you the painting and not a name. It is an original oil on canvas, not a print — the close-up photos show the knife work.
