Betsy Brown Framed Art Print “Liberty Hall” — Rose-Covered Doorway, 29” Ornate Silver-Gilt Frame

A tall print of a doorway swallowed in climbing roses — a pale double door under an arched fanlight, a window box spilling over the window above it, white hydrangeas banked at the steps. Soft greys, chalky whites and dusty reds throughout, so it reads calm rather than busy.

Signed B. Brown in the lower right, inside the image. The paper label on the back names the artist — Betsy Brown, who has lived in northern New Jersey her whole life, is largely self-taught, and takes the Hudson River painters as her touchstone — and carries the framer's mark: North American Enclosures, Inc., New York and California, Made in the USA, stock 28348. The same number is written again by hand on the kraft backing.

The frame is a wide swept moulding in silver over gold with a carved leaf-and-scroll face; inside it a deep ivory mat and a fine beaded gold fillet around the image. Glass, mat, frame and dust cover are all intact, sawtooth hanger in place.

29” H x 17” W x 1.5” D. The piece itself weighs 6 lbs.

Two things I want to be straight about. Nothing on the piece is dated, and North American Enclosures has been framing since 1963 and is still in business, so I am not going to put a decade on it. And the title “Liberty Hall” is not printed anywhere on the piece — it is a titled work in Betsy Brown's own catalogue, which is why it is used here, but I cannot prove it belongs to this image.
