Vintage Ceramic Asparagus Sauce Jar

A ceramic sauce pot modelled as a bundle of asparagus tied with a rose-pink cord, with its original matching ladle.

Marked on the base for The Haldon Group and dated ©1988, with its Made in Japan foil sticker still attached. The original retailer's label is there too — Vanderbilt, stock number 140263 — torn but still legible enough to read as an asparagus sauce pot, which is what it was sold as.

The whole piece is trompe l'oeil. The body is a cluster of spears, pale at the cut ends and deepening to green and rose at the tips; the lid is the same bundle seen from above. The lid is notched at the rim so the ladle sits in place with the pot closed — that notch is how you know the two were made for each other rather than married later.

Asparagus and hollandaise is the pairing it was made for, though it holds any warm sauce, a dressing or melted butter just as well. Fully glazed inside.
