How to Transition Your Home Decor From Summer to Fall With Vintage Finds

How to Transition Your Home Decor From Summer to Fall With Vintage Finds

There is something about the transition from summer to fall that makes us want our homes to feel a little warmer, cozier, and more inviting. But transitioning your decor doesn't have to mean packing away everything you own and replacing it with pumpkins, leaves, and seasonal decorations.

In fact, some of the best fall decorating happens gradually.

Vintage finds are especially perfect for bridging the gap between seasons because many of them add warmth, texture, history, and character without looking overly themed. A few thoughtful swaps can take a room from bright and summery to rich and cozy while still allowing your personal style to shine through.

Start by Rotating Out the Most Summery Details

When I start transitioning my own decor from summer into fall, I begin with the things that immediately feel seasonal. Anything strongly associated with summer gets rotated out first.

That includes scents! Candles, essential oils, air fresheners, and even hand soaps can make a surprising difference in how a home feels. Summer scents are swapped for warmer, cozier fragrances that better match the changing season.

I also start switching out summer-colored throw blankets, cushions, and pillow covers for textiles in richer, more fall-inspired colors. Think brown, mustard, rust, burgundy, deep green, and other earthy tones.

You don't have to change everything at once. Simply removing the brightest or most obviously summery accents creates a neutral starting point for layering in warmer pieces.

Focus on Vintage Pieces That Bridge Both Seasons

One of my favorite things about decorating with vintage is that so many pieces work beautifully throughout multiple seasons.

Certain colors of vintage glass are especially useful during the transition into fall. Amber and smoky glass immediately add warmth and moodiness while still looking elegant and timeless. A vintage amber vase that feels perfectly appropriate in September can easily stay on display through Thanksgiving and beyond.

Brass is another favorite of mine and honestly, brass anything works!

Brass candlesticks, figurines, trays, bowls, and decorative objects instantly bring warmth into a room. They pair beautifully with wood, old books, pottery, baskets, and natural stone, creating a collected look that feels cozy without screaming "fall decor."

Wooden pieces and natural stone are also wonderful transitional materials. Marble, onyx, and other decorative stones can elevate a space while bringing in the natural textures that feel especially appropriate as the weather starts to change.

The key is choosing pieces that feel warm, layered, and natural rather than specifically seasonal.

Create a Cozy Vintage Vignette

One of the easiest ways to transition your home is by creating a small vignette on a coffee table, dining table, bookshelf, or console.

A combination I especially love is vintage books, brass candlesticks and figurines, and a centerpiece natural stone bowl. Stone bookends and larger decorative crystals can also add visual interest and texture.

In my own booths, I've noticed a very obvious shift as I move away from a sunny, beachy summer feeling and gradually introduce these richer materials and colors. My favorite fall combination is:

Brass + wood + amber or smoky glass + natural stone + old books + moody artwork + interesting pottery.

That type of vignette creates an instant sense of warmth and character, and it has consistently been a hot seller in my booth every fall.

The best part is that none of these items are limited to one season. They can stay in your home long after the fall decorations come down.

Embrace Rich, Earthy, Moody Colors

Rich and earthy colors are especially popular right now, and I've noticed customers gravitating toward pieces with warmth, age, craftsmanship, and character.

And I have an important PSA for vintage lovers:

PATINA IS IN, YOU GUYS!

The small signs of age that make vintage pieces feel authentic are becoming part of their appeal rather than something to hide. Customers are loving items that show their history while still being beautiful and functional.

Brass and silver have been especially popular lately, along with vintage glassware. Particularly smoky and amber glass.

These materials naturally work their way into fall decorating because they reflect light differently than bright summer decor. They feel richer, moodier, and more collected.

Try incorporating warm-toned pottery, aged brass, dark wood, amber glass, or artwork with deeper colors. Even a small change in color palette can completely shift the feeling of a room.

Layer Instead of Completely Redecorating

My biggest piece of advice for transitioning from summer to fall is to focus on layering rather than redecorating.

You don't need to replace your everyday decor to make your home feel warmer for fall. Instead, add a few pieces with richer colors, softer textures, and natural materials.

A cozy throw blanket over an accent chair, a stack of vintage books, brass candlesticks, an amber glass vase, or a piece of warm-toned artwork can completely change the feeling of a room without costing much.

Swapping in small accents in shades of brown, mustard, rust, burgundy, or deep green can also create a seasonal mood without making your home look overly themed.

Often, simply rearranging what you already own and adding one or two cozy textiles is enough.

Invest in Vintage Decor You Can Use All Year

One reason I love decorating with vintage is that the right pieces don't have to be packed away after two months.

I especially recommend investing in versatile finds like brass, wood, natural stone, baskets, old books, and amber glass. These materials feel particularly beautiful during fall, but they can easily work into your decor throughout the rest of the year.

Instead of buying decorations that only come out for one season, look for vintage pieces that add character year-round.

A brass candlestick can feel cozy in fall, elegant during the holidays, romantic in the spring, and collected during summer. Old books can be styled differently depending on the season. A natural stone bowl can hold seasonal objects or simply stand alone as a beautiful decorative piece.

The versatility is what makes vintage such a smart investment for decorating.

Let the Transition Happen Gradually

You don't have to wake up one morning in September and suddenly turn your entire home into fall.

In fact, I think the gradual transition is much more beautiful.

Start by removing the most summery colors and scents. Add warmer textiles. Bring in brass, wood, old books, pottery, baskets, natural stone, and smoky or amber glass. Introduce deeper artwork and richer colors as the season progresses.

Before long, your home will naturally begin to feel warmer and cozier.

Fall decorating doesn't have to mean buying a cart full of seasonal decor or covering every surface with pumpkins. Sometimes the most impactful changes are simply layering in a few beautiful vintage pieces with warmth, texture, patina, and character.

And the best part? Most of them can stay right where they are long after fall is over.
